Love Defined by Ryan Cassata

This is a song I wrote for my girlfriend, Alexis. I think it’s the most romantic song I have written yet. It’s mostly an acoustic guitar song with 2 verses. I hope you enjoy the song. I spent a lot of time perfecting the guitar part I wrote. :) I am thinking of a part 2 for this song that is a bit heavier and already have a guitar part in the works for it. A lot of “homeless” people in San Francisco choose to be “homeless.” Many of them call themselves “home-free” meaning they are simply free from “homes.” There are many underground home-free networks that have formed in San Francisco. Some home-free people identify as “pirates” and they trade rocks, pencils, cheap jewelry, food and other items. Many of them are on a mission to over throw the government, gain equality, or just start tiny or large communes in Golden Gate Park. Many of them just want to be enlightened, many of them just want to be free. The police actively target homeless people.

One of my good friends who lives in the Haight District actually ran into a small problem with the police. The police wanted to kick out the 2-3 homeless guys that live in the out cut in his shop/house doorway. The police tried to kick them out and my friend said “No! This is my place, I own this space where they are sleeping and they can stay.” He even made it so the flap of his mailbox can be propped open to provide heating for the homeless people in their tent made of blankets.

I’ve met some of the coolest home-free people in San Francisco and I love them all dearly. They are all characters. Some of them extremely talented musicians, some of them just peace-makers, some of them just looking for some sense of freedom in this country. All of whom I have met have been really great to get to know.

Anyway, in the video above I am playing a home-free guys guitar. His name is Goldfish. I spent some time with him on the street with my friends in the videos. We ran into them on the street and Goldfish was looking for someone to tune his guitar. I offered to tune it. Then he said “please play something!” So we started jamming. It was a lot of fun. Then I gave him a guitar pick because he had none and he gave me a pencil in return. He mentioned that he can’t take something from someone else unless he traded. My girlfriend gave him a 1” pin and he gave her a cool looking rock. What a cool guy! Anyway, check out the video to get a sense of how cool some of these people living in the Haight are. :)
